Managing defects

Use the Defects tab to review and manage issues found during inspections. Defects are linked to the affected equipment item so you can track the issue through to rectification and closure.

Use Filters to narrow the defects grid. For example, filter by Status to separate open and closed defects, or by Priority to focus on the most important issues.

To select defects:

  1. Select the checkbox beside each defect you want to work with.
  2. Check Selection Count before starting an update, opening defects, or closing defects.

For advanced options, see Filtering and sorting and Selecting items.

  1. Open the menu beside the defect’s row action.
  2. Select View Defect.

Use this view when you need to examine one defect in more detail. For record information and selection scope, see the Defect Window reference.

Defects are normally created when uploaded inspection results contain non-conformance findings. The defect retains its relationship to the equipment and inspection that identified the issue.

When uploading an Inspection Work Pack, the option Ignore NC inspection results (do not create defects) prevents applicable results from creating defects. Use this option only when those results should not enter the project’s defect workflow.

See Answering inspection questions and Uploading inspection results for the preceding inspection steps.

Use Update to change the same fields on one defect or several selected defects.

  1. Select the defects to update.
  2. Check Selection Count.
  3. Select Update.
  4. In the Update dialog, use + Add field to choose each field you want to change. Available fields include:
    • Rectification
    • Priority
    • Comment
    • The project’s other_1 to other_6 fields
  5. Enter the new values.
  6. Select Review and check the proposed changes.
  7. Select Confirm to apply the update.

Only fields added to the update are changed. Other values on the selected defects remain unchanged.

  1. Select the open defects that have been resolved.
  2. Check Selection Count.
  3. Select Close.
  4. Enter an optional comment explaining the outcome.
  5. Select Close Defects.

Close defects promptly after resolution so the open-defect list remains useful. Add a comment when it will help another user understand why the defects were closed.

  1. Select the closed defects that need further work.
  2. Check Selection Count.
  3. Select Open.
  4. Enter an optional comment explaining why the defects are being reopened.
  5. Select Open Defects.

Reopening returns the selected defects to the active workflow without creating new defect records.
